Methodological Approach & Methods

Methodology Structure

a) Methodological approach: Narrative ethnography. I analyzed the individual and
collective narratives through the dialog of different voices that have affected or
have been affected by the place (or have lived the place).

b) Methods:

  1. In depth, semi structured Interviews.
  2. Using pictures to recall lived moments and spaces, drawing exercises to
reconstruct the place through memory and a audiovisual tour through the house,
to confront the past memory with the present of the house.
  3. Ethnographic research.
-Although the ethnographic research was intended to be an analysis of the
inhabitants of the house, it became a dynamic endeavor in which I understood
the different perspectives of each one of the participants around the farm, by
visiting and experiencing their daily lives, going to their houses or workplaces
and getting to know them better, even the members of my family which I barely
knew or had just formal encounters.

c) The methodology was intended to be divided in three stages: The first one tried
to understand the individual and collective narratives (memories) through
interviews and artistic exercises (they draw the house and recreate their
memories in the different places), the second was an ethnographic analysis, in
which I visited the house for a month, to have a direct interaction with the place
and understand the daily life in the house. Nevertheless, the circumstances of

the research changed though the fieldwork and I had to adapt and adjust to the
problems presented through the research.

d) Participants: The participants would be the people who have an emotional
attachment with the house or the wider land (were involved with the house or
the land and are willing to participate in the research).

The participants would be divided in three groups, based on their age.

-Divided by generations, according to their memories and position over the land.
-Grandfathers Generation: People that lived, owned or claimed the house after the first time that was abandoned. +60 years old.
-Parents Generation: People that lived, owned or claimed the house after the second time that was abandoned. +40 years old.
